Back up your website regularly

In this blog post I want to talk about making a backup of your website. I will not only indicate how you can do this in WordPress, but also in Drupal.

The importance of a backup

Backing up your website is very important. Imagine that your website is hacked, or you install a bad plugin or that you have in some way locked yourself out. Knowing that you have a copy of your website is a reassuring thought when you do an update for the first time and you feel insecure about it. Unfortunately, experience shows that you can never count for a 100% on the backups of your hosting provider.

Backing up with a WordPress plugin

There are several free and paid WordPress plugins that you can use to back up your website. To my satisfaction I use the free plugin UpdraftPlus, which is very easy to set up. You can then save the backup in the cloud or on your computer. And you can schedule the backups so that they take place automatically (weekly for me). You can also manually back up. And furthermore you can also set how many backups you want to keep.

UpdraftPlus is the most popular free WordPress backup plugin. The disadvantage of a free plugin may be that the support leaves to be desired in case of questions and / or problems. You could therefore opt for a paid backup plugin. Popular affordable WordPress backup plugins are: BackupBuddy, VaultPress and BackWPup. BackWPup and UpdraftPlus both also have a paid version.

Making a backup in Drupal

It is also easy to make a backup in Drupal. Via Settings and System you go to Backup and Migrate. Making a so-called quick backup is sufficient to make a copy of your website. You can save these on your PC.
